Look Up

As mamas navigate their hectic days, there are three ways in which we focus. We can look down, straight ahead, and up. If you look down, you can run into things and miss many things happening right before you. If you look ahead, you can see things coming your way, but world issues tend to cloud our vision. But what happens when we look up? We see beauty in cloud formations, sunsets and sunrises, and birds of every color filling the skies. We see God.

Mama, where is your focus? You have to look down not to trip on the toys strewn across your floor, but how much are you looking down at your phone when the people you love are in the room? What does this tell them about their importance to you? Although phones can be good for many reasons, how much time does it steal from you for the essential things, such as your family and conversations that should be happening?

What about just looking ahead? Most people agree that looking ahead is the way to move forward and not get stuck in the past. Looking forward helps you to see obstacles and opportunities in your future. However, if we look straight on, we see the world and everything that wants to trap us outside of God’s will in our lives. We see wrongs becoming “accepted.” We hear lies becoming normalized. We feel trapped inside the gray area between what should be the black and white of right and wrong.

So how about looking up? If we look up, we look to God’s will for our future. We can also clearly see His beautiful creation all around us. We won’t miss His majesty in the skies or the moments He has planned for us. We will then be aware of the situations ahead of us, seen through His lens, so we know how to handle approaching problems. This will shape our attitudes and behaviors as Christian Moms as we deal with the counter-cultural influences that can quickly derail us from the peaceful and joyous path He intends for us.

Interestingly, the bible encourages us to “look up” 46 times in various passages relating to this truth. (openbible.info) This shows us that we aren’t the first group of Moms God reminds us about His plan and purpose for our lives. Look to Him as you move forward, and know He will direct your path. Seek His perfect wisdom and direction. Don’t let the world cloud your future; be ready for His glorious blue skies before you as you look up.

Luke 21: 28- “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
